Thread: what the “dichotomies” in mbti/16 personalities REALLY mean (debunking common misconceptions ;))
An “Extrovert” in mbti does not (necessarily) refer to a person who is hyper-social, overtly expressive, friendly and/or energized by interactions with other people. It DOES refer to someone who’s first cognitive function is of extraverted energy (Ne, Se, Te or Fe). Nothing else.
An “Introvert” in mbti does not (necessarily) refer to a person who is super shy, reserved, thoughtful, deep, boring and/or needs a lot of alone time to recharge. It DOES refer to someone who’s first cognitive function is of introverted energy (Ni, Si, Fi or Ti). Nothing else.
A “Sensor” in mbti does not (necessarily) refer to a person who is shallow, pragmatic, indulgent and/or doesn’t know what it is to perceive anything beyond their 5 senses. It DOES refer to someone who’s first or second cognitive function is either Se or Si. Nothing else.
An “Intuitive” in mbti does not (necessarily) refer to a person who is intellectual, impractical, psychic, deluisonal, imaginative and/or oblivious to physical reality. It DOES refer to someone who’s first or second cognitive function is either Ne or Ni. Nothing else.
A “Feeler” in mbti does not (necessarily) refer to a person who has feelings (!!) (we all do), is emotional, cannot think rationally, is a people-pleaser and/or a pushover/crybaby. It DOES refer to someone who’s first or second cognitive function is either Fe or Fi. Nothing else.
A “Thinker” in mbti does not (necessarily) refer to a person who has strong opinions (!!) (we all do), doesn’t have emotions (again, we all do), is intelligent and/or is evil/cold. It DOES refer to someone who’s first or second cognitive function is either Te or Ti. Nothing else.
A “Judger” in mbti does not (necessarily) refer to an anal person, someone who is judgy, stuck-up and/or super-organized/ambitious. It DOES refer to someone who’s first EXTRAVERTED cognitive function (can be the first or the second) is a judging function (Fe or Te). Nothing else.
A “Perceiver” in mbti does not (necessarily) refer to a person who is a hippie, lazy, tolerant, free-spirited and/or easy-going. It DOES refer to someone who’s first EXTRAVERTED cognitive function (can be the first or the second) is a perceiving function (Ne or Se). Nothing else.
CONCLUSION: MBTI is primarily about the FUNCTIONS. The letters are only there to make the system clearer/more approachable for the public.
CONCLUSION 2: The “dichotomies” in MBTI are NOT the same definitions given to those words usually in psychology. The FUNCTIONS are what matters. And they are NEUTRAL. Commonly given subjective value should only be thought of as an “inclination”/stereotype. Not an end-all be-all.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you don't want ppl. to keep reducing MBTI to a "The Big Five"-sort-of-level, please treat it as it should be, try start using the functions and help stop making that happen!!! Thank u so much for your attention, love y’all.
