I spoke at couple of events recently for aspiring product managers, and I noted that I'm often asked how I got into product and how I landed a job at Atlassian. To me it came down to my propensity to take risks.
Some risks were a flop but others were successful, both taught me a lot. The most important things I learnt are:
1. You don’t need to be an expert in a field to take a risk in it. (But you do need to be passionate about it).

2. The experiences you gain will be more valuable than anything you can read in a book or blog.
3. Always ask yourself ‘what’s the worst that could happen?' It’s often not as bad as you think, or it’s reversible.
4. People always talk about saying ‘No’ is one of the hardest skills of being a Product Manager. What they don’t tell you is that saying yes to more things in your career is the key to progress.
I decided to write about it in my first blog. https://link.medium.com/6LO3kGRmt8
I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on taking risks!
