It's really wild how many people think "Not enough people have died for me to take this seriously" is a legit argument, especially considering the numbers of people who have. All that means is "No one I care about has died," and meanwhile some people have lost so many.
It's heartbreaking watching the people who *have* lost love ones have to hear this shit. My good friend has lost five relatives - tell her that's enough for you. Tell someone who's lost their parents or their best friend it's not enough for you.
By far the most painful thing I've seen so far is a woman have to respond to a jokey meme about killing your spouse due to quarantine with "That's not really funny to me since getting up from shiva for my husband yesterday." In a closed text group, not even a social media post.
People forget what and who we're dealing with. There are people who will carry injuries, scars, grief from this forever. It's really wonderful if you've been lucky, but you're going to encounter people who haven't, and your apathy is just another layer of cruelty.
