Not only have universities wasted faculty time and energy in refusing to face the necessity of all remote instruction this fall, they have squandered faculty confidence in the judgment and trustworthiness of administration and boards of trustees and regents. 1/
Faculty across the country have been galvanized by the poor, unrealistic decisions about reopening campuses and also by the opaque processes used to make these decisions. 2/
Many universities have made decisions by relying on outside management consultants and handpicked committees rather than by involving the faculty broadly and fully. 3/
Many universities have created orchestrated, faux meetings rather than relied on real faculty deliberation and advice. 4/
I hope faculty use the bonds they are building to push back on foolish reopening plans to push for meaningful faculty governance, a reorientation of where salary money goes, and more. 5/5
