People have been protesting for Breonna Taylor for months, nonstop, particularly within her community in Louisville. She was never ignored or forgotten, there was never any point - at all - where folks "weren't talking about" her or fighting for her.
Her community has been fighting for her NONSTOP. Her people and Black folks who love her have been showing up for her. There have been actions across the country, phone and email campaigns and petitions.
Black folks fighting for her led to no-knock warrants being banned in Louisville and a push to ban them on a federal level.
“Breonna, that’s all she wanted to do was save lives. With this law, she’ll get to continue to do that. So, we’re grateful for that. She would be so happy.” - Tamika Palmer, Breonna Taylor's mother
I struggle with the concept of "justice" for Black folk murdered by police because there is absolutely nothing that can be done that will mitigate their deaths or the loss for their loved ones.
For some folks, these laws that prevent other Black folks from suffering this same violence is justice, for others it's seeing the murderers in jail, and for others all of the above STILL wouldn’t look like justice for the people stolen from us.
What I do know is that whatever we think “justice" for Breonna Taylor is, whatever work there still is to be done to achieve it, it is not Black folks "forgetting" her or "not caring as much” as folks claim we do about other murdered Black folk that is in the way of that justice.
Black folks have thrown nothing but love, support and energy into fighting for her and it is Louisville politicians and police dragging their feet with this investigation and the fact their laws and police unions don't allow for firing police until an investigation is concluded-
-that is the reason these officers have not yet been arrested and charged. So maybe instead of shaming Black folks for "forgetting" Breonna or "not fighting hard enough" for her, placing the blame and burden of white supremacy on us, meme-ing her name and death endlessly and-
-reducing her to a clout token, get involved with organizers and folks fighting to end the protections of police unions so we can start seeing "justice" for murdered Black folks and not just trending hashtags.
