BREAKING (And yes, I'm coming out of vacation for this)... *some* of the redactions in the search warrants in the mass murder investigation have been un-redacted 1/
This one jumps out at me: one person who knew GW told police he "[GW] builds fires and burns bodies, is a sexual predator and supplies drugs in Portapique and Economy, Nova Scotia"
This was a statement given by someone (unknown to me) to the Halifax police on April 19.
The same person told police that they "is aware of all the secret hides located in the building [in Dartmouth]/ There are two false walls in the back bathroom and two in the garage."
This person also told police that they "was aware that he [GW] had smuggled drugs and guns from Maine for years and had a stockpile of guns"
The same person told police that "[GW] smuggled drugs from Maine and had a bag of 10,000 oxy-contin and 15,000 dilaudid from a reservation in New Brunswick"
To no one's surprise, we now can confirm that GW had an uncle in the RCMP
Another person, who spoke with the RCMP on April 19, told police that there was a "secret room" behind a "false wall" in the Dartmouth building.
This person said there were "secret hiding spots" on GW's properties. The person said that GW showed another person a hidden compartment under a workbench in his garage [ie, in Portapique], where there was a "high powered rifle"
There is still A LOT of redacted information in the search warrant documents. I suspect much of it will be just as alarming as what was released today.
I've been hearing rumours for months that GW was involved in the drug trade. One person's conversation to police doesn't confirm that, but it sure does back up the rumours. I'll just leave it at this for the time being: there's more reporting to do on this aspect.
And, well, consider that one person knew, or thought they knew, that GW "burned bodies" and evidently did not tell police (or did they?)
We no know that multiple people had SEEN GW's weapons. Multiple people knew that he was abusive. One person told the Examiner she actually told police about this, and nothing came of it. What of the others?
And consider: we would not now have this new information had not the media coalition, including the Halifax Examiner, gone to court to get this released. Imagine had we not... it would remain secret to the public, entirely, through the review panel's work, and possibly even after
That is: the public may have NEVER known about the witness claims that GW "burned bodies," was a drug dealer, and smuggled guns and drugs, had not we hired a lawyer and pressed the case in court. That's our job, as reporters and media orgs....
But, and I'm sorry to bring it back to this, it cost money, and lots of it. The Examiner put our share of the last lawyer bill on the corporate credit card, punting payment down the road a bit (with interest) and that was before the very large bills for July come in.
