Taking the GL concept and grounding it in a very Alien-infused capitalist hard sci-fi setting is such a cool idea that I am shocked it took till this OGN to run with it
I'm not sure if the SFX work here is directly in the pencils from Hardman or part of the lettering from Bowland but either way it is very effective
Arisia going "dude I have zero reason to listen to you, you ain't shit and this is my homeworld" to Hal's face is
Very good

The little glimpses you get at The Bad Shit that has happened on Earth are very effective and hit fairly close to home nowadays
A lot of comics have gestured at OH THE GUARDIANS HAVE GOOD INTENTIONS THEY ARE JUST SHORT SIGHTED
It is
Very refreshing to see a story where they are objectively horrid and a clear stand in for authoritative elements refusing to admit responsibility
"There were safeguards"

One of my favorite tweaks this book does with the GL mythos is wholly getting rid of the YOU ARE CHOSEN BY THE RING mechanic
Making all GLs just...people, trying to do their best is SO much more interesting. Even if it leaves the door open for abuses of the mantle.

I have ALWAYS been against the whole YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO OVERCOME GREAT FEAR thing
The core appeal of superheroes, to me, is that they come from anywhere and anyone can be one.
Making GLs have to go through a dang job interview for the gig is just...thoroughly lame.

Democratically appointed leadership of the new self-supporting Lanterns
Vs.
The self-described seeker of law and order upset that they disobeyed his orders and founding a new force of ring wielders beholden to his will and command.
Huh!

I know John Stewart is showing up in Vol. 2 so Earth Stuff is gonna happen which is good because I would have been real disappointed if this incredibly hype ending wasn't paid off on.
The idea of Hal returning not to just be a generic hero but to enact substantial change is WILD

So yeah
GL Earth One
Good as hell! Go read it!
I'll have a review of Vol. 2 when it releases next month for @ComicBookHerald, so keep an eye out for that.
Next up: Far Sector.

It has been said dozens of times but holy christ Jamal Campbell is just...mind meltingly good on Far Sector.
I am honestly not sure I've ever seen an artist pull off pencils/inks and colors and have it look this jaw-dropping. Dude is out here re-defining sci-fi superhero comics.

Honestly Earth One and Far Sector make for very interesting reading companions as they are about as firmly on either end of the sci-fi spectrum as possible.
Jemisin and Campbell's sleek, clean high concept sci-fi showcase is just as interesting but feels entirely distinct.

Just the one little addition makes all the change in the world
It varies but, traditionally, GLs are tasked with protecting sectors without the inhabitants of said sectors actually asking for or consenting to their "protection"
Jo being there because she was invited is big!

God this little recap could have easily been a quick blurb of text on a credits page but instead Jemisin and Campbell just decided to do THIS in a wild stylistic flourishe
Don't worry about how things fit into the story if you can just do cool shit and make it work just fine.

Jemisin does a LOT of things great on this series but her background as a sci-fi novelist really shows in the work she does to make each of the species in The City feel unique and fleshed out.
Usually GL aliens are "we are made of rock, or are dinosaur people, or have 3 arms!"

For ever Rot Lop Fan or Leezle Pon you have a dozen corpsfolks that are, functionally, just humans that look different. Even fan favorite aliens like Kilowog and Salaak don't have much unique or interesting that makes them feel actually ALIEN outside of their looks.
The fact that Jo reads horny fanfic on Totally Not AO3 and it isn't played mockingly but is instead just a cute character trait is how you know this was written by a woman
In the 7 months since this issue dropped this page went from Chilling and Infuriating to EXTREMELY CHILLING AND INFURITATING OH CHRIST
Just
Jesus
I am not sure I have seen a comic be more Of It's Time than Far Sector is right now
Obviously the nightmare that is America right now is a long time in the making and ain't brand new but still
Holy shit
