This whole conversation about "was the lockdown legal" is doing my head in. It might just be my Chaotic Good tendencies, but I don't actually give a flying fuck whether it was legal. It was the right thing to do, it was hard, but we did it and apart from a small number of tragic
losses (for every loss is a tragedy to those who loved them) we have come out the other side relatively unscathed. If we hadn't had venal employers seeing how they could profit from the circumstances, we wouldn't have had nearly as many layoffs either. I'm not saying that the
situation isn't just a tiny bit FUBAR, because it is, but you know what? THE VAST MAJORITY OF US ARE STILL HERE TO FIX IT. Imagine for a moment, we'd fucked things up to the extent the Americans have (mostly), we'd be looking at a long term SNAFU and we'd have already lost more
than 1500 lives. Now if you ask me, the vast majority of those who are doing it tough now, were ALREADY doing it tough, due to the woeful levels of welfare, healthcare, and all around giving a fuck about poor people that we have become accustomed to. We really are so wedded
to the "she'll be right" attitude that we'll debate whether it's reasonable for people to live in houses that are SLOWLY KILLING THEM. We'll debate whether it's reasonable for people who can't work in a fully abled way to EARN ENOUGH TO LIVE FULL LIVES. We'll debate whether it's
reasonable for people to be excluded from safety because of the discomfort of others. We'll endlessly fucking debate the most bullshit arguments that no one with any sense of decency would think to make. And this argument that the lockdown wasn't legal? IT'S BULLSHIT.
Whether or not the Government actually had the powers to do what they did, whether it gave the police the powers to back it up, I DON'T CARE. The only thing this will achieve is either a moot point, because we've been successful, or, God forbid, an exercise in muddying the waters
So that again, God forbid, we have a second wave of the virus here, will make it 10 TIMES Harder for the Powers That Be to keep us safe. Would I trust anyone with those powers? Would I fuck. But I just the Prime Minister and her team. You know why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE, IN WORD AND
DEED, PROVEN THEMSELVES WORTHY OF THAT TRUST. Did they get everything right? No. But they, at every stage, did their best to get it right, to keep us safe. I wouldn't trust a National government to do any other than what they have always done. Uplift those who don't need it at
The expense of those who do. They are craven, and cowardly, and have no business being in a position to do such great harms as they have done in the past, to those who have been absolutely powerless to stop it.
HERE ENDETH THE RANT. #nzpol
