Homeschooling post of the day: what parents who choose public/private/charter school have been doing is not homeschooling (with gifs for fun)
Homeschooling is all about customizing your child’s education to their/your needs, learning style, comfort level, abilities, and lifestyle. The ultimate goal for most homeschooling fams is to foster a love of lifelong learning (I love alliteration), and raise awesome adults.
We call it “doing life together”. We go to the store, mechanic, parks, conservation areas, library, science centre, zoo, historical villages, small town museums, natural history museums, cultural museums, art galleries, etc regularly with other homeschooling families.
There are no wrong answers, only opportunities to learn. That’s correct folks. I mark my kids’ work not for a %, gpa, or letter grade, but to see where we need to focus our attention. It’s always positive reinforcement.
We choose how, when, and what we’re learning. Yes, I said we. I am learning right alongside my kids. I’ve learned all sorts of cool things that I never did learn in school, and I am certain kids in public school are learning things my kids are not learning. That’s ok.
In short, Pandemic Schooling is not Homeschooling. Pandemic schooling sucks tail pipes and we all hate it! Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
