Tried in good faith to read that Atlantic piece on Walt Disney World, but it is written in such bad faith that I only made it to the passage where he talks about checking in for Magical Express before closing the tab.
Yes, it’s worth covering what Disney is and is not doing with regards to COVID safety. It’s worth interrogating why some people are eager to go even amidst a pandemic. Sending in a writer with seething dismissal of the entire concept of theme parks is not the way to do it.
This writer is immediately hostile not just to the idea of theme parks but also the people of central Florida who are trying to do what they can to get by under a state government that’s largely abandoned them. This smug superiority to people’s suffering is an ugly look.
Yes, by all means criticize Disney. Criticize Florida’s government. Criticize all the factors that led to the terrible situation we find ourselves in, but also do your fucking job as a journalist to understand and engage with the entire picture and how it affects people.
