If you are planning on crafting a tweet that states "You're not a real [Profession] unless you do [Thing that many people cannot access because of oh so many obvious reasons]," perhaps log off and think about what insecurity is spurring that tweet.
Recently someone tried the whole "You're not a real geologist unless you do fieldwork" lukewarm take.
I'm a palaeontologist with a heavy field component to my research, and even I know this is a garbage, exclusionary, ableist take.
I don't have a Degree in Palaeontology: my undergrad was a double major in Geology & Geophysics (my focus was sedimentary geology) and Zoology.
Yeah, there are parts of geology research that have a field component.
Most of what we learned in geology was LABORATORY BASED.
I learned to log core samples. Those are loooong cylindars of rock that show you what all of the different rock layers look like underground. You log core in the lab.
I learned to read well logs and aerial photos (excuse me while I shudder at the memory). That was lab-based.
Relevant to my particular branch of research, which is #ichnology? 3D digital photogrammetry! You collect overlapping photos of a trackway in the field, and then use relatively inexpensive software to turn those 2D images into 3D! Oh, the accuracy can be sub-millimeter!
This is why all disciplines in geology and palaeontology are important and just as "real" as the other: initial data and samples are collected in the field by field specialists, and other specialists (sedimentary, logging, 3D analysis, etc) analyse the data. It's a team effort.
There are SO MANY reasons why the field is not accessible to everyone, which makes it a bunch of elitist crap to say you MUST do fieldwork to be [Profession].
My current barrier to fieldwork: employment and lack of funds. Travelling to field sites is spendy.
People may not be able to physically access field sites safely. Does that mean that they cannot be "real" geologists or palaeontologists? Hell no! It takes an obtuse lack of consideration to not have projects in your lab that can take different accessibility needs into account.
You're not "better" than someone who can't access the field. Usually it's a pride/bravado/macho mentality that makes some people pull this kind of attitude.
Oh, and saying "You can't be X if you don't Y" makes you look like you know very little about your field.
If a grizzled ol' fieldwork specialist like myself knows of several ways #ichnology (it's the specialty I can talk about) is done outside of the fieldwork component, it isn't that hard to realize that ALL aspects, lab and field, are REAL ichnology (or your profession).
