Choosing books for my fifth grader for the fall, and have noticed that so much of today's kid lit almost fetishizes social/cultural problems. Seems the message adults want to send to kids is: the world is a broken place, bad things are happening all over it. You must fix them.
But I feel like I have an opportunity to send him a message to believe in the world, and recognize the beauty of diff kinds of people, nature, etc. Of course there are problems, but we live in an amazing world. That's what I want him to walk away with.
Thinking of one of my favorite quotes from David Sobel, paraphrasing here-- "we must teach kids to love the world before we ask them to save it."
Does anyone have any suggestions for books along these lines? Would love any and all suggestions!
