I’ve noticed the libertarian right’s habit of “adopting” a particular fringe gay person, black person or minority group individual. David Bull & Inaya Folarin Iman being championed by Nigel Farage & the Brexit Party are two examples.

...Then they hold X or Y “adoptee” up as being representative of a specific minority “feature” so they can say “See! Brexiters/the right/libertarians aren’t generally racist/homophobic/etc! Here’s a black/gay/etc person on our side!”

...This is a bit like the old “I’m not racist, my postman is Chinese!” chestnut. The likes of Farage & Johnson in particular seem to have a nose for sniffing out these folks, who clearly have self-esteem issues & are willing to sell out their own rights

...the sight of a gay man cozying up to a notorious homophobe or a black woman gleefully cheerleading for a documented racist seems so paradoxical.
