Looking forward to @DingemanseMark's #UKCLC2020 plenary on "Elementary particles of conversation"!
@DingemanseMark argues that interjections are in fact an elementary part of human language 1/n #ukclc2020
He argues that interactions are the evolutionary landscape of linguistic resources, so we should pay close attention to what people actually do in interaction - and one of the things they do is use interjections frequently 2/n #UKCLC2020
Dingemanse also shows that interjections have important functions in interaction - for example, they serve as conversational repair signals, which occured on average 84 seconds across many different languages and without those communication broke down #ukclc2020 3/n
interjections like (m-hm, huh?, oh. etc) therefore are basic interactional tools: they help us talk and think, increase error-tolerance and scaffold complex language - we need them to actually get to complex language #UKCLC2020 4/n
