Folks, I'm dying. What. A. Joke.

First. *Gestures at Appalachia* We have tons of European descendants living in perpetual poverty. But do go on.

Second. Almost nothing within this piece is referenced. (see QT)

This is not scholarship.

This is structural racism manifested.

And as @AbbyCScience has pointed out, we can go ahead and drop the "outrage" over how something like this was published in 2020.

Of course it was.

Racism, sexism, etc are alive and well everywhere. That includes our within universities and academic publishing. 2/
Is this piece more blatant than most? Yes.

Is racist garbage published in academic journals every day? Absolutely.

And it will continue to happen so long as we fail to take responsibility for making these institutions anti-racist. 3/
This piece should absolutely be retracted.

The institutions & people who have provided this person a platform should be forced to reckon with their support of someone who helped to further structural racism (i.e., welfare reforms).

But that's not enough. 4/
We have to do the work of recreating universities & academic journals as anti-racist institutions.

We have to recon with the damage racism has done to all of us, BIOPC & white.

We have to prevent these kinds of racist claims from going unchallenged.

It's on us to change. 5/
That means first admitting that we, the institutions we are a part of, & the places where we live, continue to perpetuate racism every. single. day.

Racism never left.

So we must fight it every. single. day.
Five paragraphs before the first citation!

Any chance this is because the assertions can't be backed up?

Whether intentional or not, I doubt many of these assertions can be validated.

The lack of citations alone should have kept this fro being published.

It's. A. Joke.
