DC reopened despite not meetings 4 of its 6 metrics. Cases (obviously) are going up with no sign of stopping.
We haven’t had this many days of sustained increase in community spread since APRIL.

For months, DC has been reporting decreases that turned out to be increases once tests and contact tracing are done.
They’re now reporting on a 13 day lag to “reduce volatility.” That’s good! The metric is much less confusing to look at now.

What DC has NOT done is make any attempt to stop the increasing spread caused by reopening.
Indoor dining, gym, and salons are open. Church choirs are practicing.
Mayor Bowser tweaked the mask law and announced that people must isolate after traveling. That’s it.

I appreciate the new 13-day lag in community spread data. It makes the metric far less volatile (and thus more useful).
But it was weird that when adjusting the timing of metric, the Mayor’s office REMOVED the most recent 3 days of data (7/11-7/13).

The removal plus the new reporting lag means that the updated data for 7/13 (which shows our highest peak since June 1) was posted on Sunday, instead of on Friday.
The explanation from the Mayor’s office was “we are just looking at data.”

DC previously removed data in June to rush reopening (cases had spiked and Bowser didn’t want to delay)
DC isn’t close to reopening into Phase 3 but Bowser does want to blame someone else for this backslide. It’s other states, it’s travel, it’s grocery trips....not her plan
