@RoxanaDaneshjou I agree with you. However, the problem is, this is not a wake-up call. This is the same thing Black people (students/trainees/ faculty members) have been shouting from the rooftops..." https://twitter.com/RoxanaDaneshjou/status/1286711862843899912
I cannot speak from others experiences but JUST in regards to my appearance I have had some horrendously unprofessional things said to me:
1. pointing out my natural hair as "wild and exotic looking"... #whitemedtwitter this is NEVER a compliment.
2. Suggested that I wear fewer prints, as I don't want to "bring attention to myself and distract my patients in their healing process"... cause you know animal print really messes with your depression recovery.
3. Suggested that I wear looser fitting pants and skirts.
My clothing is always appropriately fitted to my dress size/ pants size, I happen to be "bottom-heavy" so everything looks "clingy".
4.suggests which store I should purchase my clothing. (cuz it's that easy)
Those examples are JUST about the way I show up into this white world every day: Black skin, curly hair, and curvy hips.
ain't nothing bout this NEW. We've just been hiding in a corner, straightening our hair, wearing ill-fitted pants hoping people would let us our damn work.
This "assimilate or die" mentality in medicine is now novel to medicine either. Last yr, of the two cases I know of an elementary school child and an HS child, were expelled for wearing their natural hair.
A wrestling coach in NJ took it upon himself to cut the locks off a child in PUBLIC, before a meet because HE deemed it was "unprofessional" (see also--- coded language for not white enough".
This extends so much farther than physical appearance. Yet these are the conditions that Black families must send their children to school in, must work in... in order to even hope for a chance of economic growth within their generation.
This my #MedBikini friends is OPPRESSION.
