I was speaking to a couple of friends on the weekend just gone and we were saying that when fans & even pundits talk about transfer targets and potentially who you could bring into your club, you look far and wide and consider players around the world, not just your own country.
However, when it comes to managers it just seems to be the same names that get thrown about every time, and this is partly down to people knowing lots of teams and players, but not managers.
Just have a look at the list of Birmingham’s next manager odds (excl the Spanish prince)

Now, I know the odds on SkyBet aren’t the list that Birmingham’s Heirarchy have went out to target but it does raise the question of why are so many clubs willing to take a gamble on so many imported players from around the word but not for managers?
I guess the obvious answer to that is Pedigree, Experience, Knowing what you’re gonna get etc but it’s very uninspired and lazy, especially since managers do generally cost less than players, league relative of course.
My point with all these managers, is that, they’ve all brought forward-thinking tactics and philosophies with them and showed new ways of playing the game that’s certainly more aesthetically pleasing than Pulisball and there’s so many more examples than just these 3.
Obviously, there are a lot of factors that will play into landing a lesser known manager including researching playing style and previous managerial history, selling the Teesside area to somebody, relocation for said manager and competition from other clubs etc...
I’m not saying as well that we should go hire RC Lens u18 manager cos he’s the hipster choice or different. It has to be a considered appointment and if it turns out that the best option or fit at the time is a known quantity and has managed in the championship/prem then so be it
Simply put though, there could be a manager out there at Cádiz FC playing the beautiful game who we could look into yet we’ll hire a lad from Nunthorpe just cos he’s local.
The rumours we’re hearing so far is that Warnock wants to stay on for another year and whilst I can understand it, if we are wanting to build a team/project for the future then a 1 year appointment doesn’t seem right and given his age, it would be best to look elsewhere.
If Warnock does stay, I’ll be there regardless and I’ll cheer on the Boro but I think the entertainment/quality value will be reminiscent of Pulis and we all remember how bored we were even under Pulis’ wins so I do think we can find someone with a more progressive approach.
For all I know the club could be doing this and we all don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes but as Sunderland Til I Die showed us, people working at a multi-million pound football club brainstormed transfer targets and put “Zlatan” - I hope we don’t have morons like that.
I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough who’ll take the helm and try to make something of the Boro but this is just my personal musings on what we could do and how we could stop the constant chopping and changing between managers/playing styles in the last few years.
