I have some experiences to share on this obesity stuff - for the last seven years I've been more or less living in the UK and my weight has more or less been steadily climbing up. This is not a healthy place to live, and work is at the bottom of it.
Work is unhealthy and steals all your time and energy. People force themselves to go to the gym because their daily tasks don’t provide any physical exertion or movement. Work fucked my back, which made weight even more of an issue.
Work stops people from cooking more, eating more fresh produce and taking a healthier approach to their meals. Work is what makes us guzzle down a takeaway in front of the TV because we’re drained, and unhappy and this is our idea of a treat.
Work doesn’t pay. Work doesn't pay for your 5 a day. Work doesn’t pay for a healthy leisurely lunch or a slow nutritious breakfast. Work doesn’t pay for a social dinner with friends, family or neighbours. Work doesn’t pay for your own home with a garden where you can grow food.
Work doesn’t pay for enough space for all your flatmates to have equal access to the kitchen and enough space and time to prepare their meals.
Work doesn’t leave time for more walks, more cycle rides, more visits to the swimming pool, more activity classes - and it doesn’t pay for them either.
And I'm an office worker. For people with families, with more physical jobs - are you really going to tell a cleaner who is moving all day long they need to start cycling when what they need is to be able to afford your fresh produce and not have to work 3 jobs to feed their kids
The choice between eating or clothing your family or paying the heating bill is real for millions - and you want to go and talk about weight management?
Families crammed in damp, airless dwellings with no access to outside space and you want to fight the virus that is killing them because they are POOR by talking to them about their weight?
You can't afford good health on a minimum wage, you can't afford good health on UC and frankly you can't afford good health in a world where you are expected to devote at least 1/3 of your time to work!
