I want homelessness, a crisis created and sustained by capitalism, resolved in my lifetime.
Honestly, we all have a role to play in ending homelessness. It starts with shifting how you view the problem and those experiencing it. It starts with the understanding that it can be you, that it’s not a moral consequence, that housing is a human right.
Every uprising in this country should have people who are unhoused in mind, their voices elevated, the issue of housing centered. It’s a Black issue, an LGBTQ issue, a policing issue, an issue of mass incarceration, a public health issue, a disability issue, a Veterans issue.
These are ideas I’ve expressed before and will again. We should only be able to rest as well as the many who are unhoused.
Homelessness is not something we’re even comfortable discussing in our culture. My hope is that I can contribute to changing that, by sharing my own stories and uplifting the stories of others who have experienced it. We don’t resolve what we avoid.
