My Uganda, Rwanda Backpacking Experience. A Thread #zeddytravels
I have been to Uganda a couple of times but never traveled to Rwanda my last attempt was close to the border but that didn't count as a country traveled so wanted to change that. First thought was to take a direct bus to Kigali but I didn't want to sit on a bus that long
So I decided to take the bus from Nairobi to Kampala. Booked my ticket with @Modern_Coast
Spend a few hours at the border to get my passport and Yellow fever checked then continued with the journey. @_AfricanUnion back to you with #visafreeafrica. Which bus rides do you prefer day or night?
I am not one to criticize but also recognize progress. The one-stop border post by EAC is really a game-changer. If you have experience crossing borders before and now it really is something to celebrate 👏🏾
Kampala is one of my fav cities in E. Africa have so many memories here the city is always a walk down memory lane. I had to carry light for this trip and my plan to borrow @zollz sleeping mattress couldn't work due to weight. So my yoga mat was going to be my bed for this trip
Streets ok Kampala 🇺🇬
I had never visited the National mosque of Kampala and it was something I really wanted to tick off my bucket list so had the opportunity to do it with a day tour of Kampala city.
Are you even in Kampala if you don't boda boda? Also checking this image now and seems the guy had a good prediction of the EPL season 😂
The next part of the journey was to travel from Kampala to Kabale. I went with Jaguar buses which were very comfortable and playing back to back Ugandan hits which did not make it in Kenyan airwaves.
The journey is long but doesn't worry. There are a few stops for breaks and I really need those, I should share travel hack for 6ft plus travelers 😭😫
Kabale is a district in Western Uganda, I learnt that the name comes from local language to mean "Small Stone"
Kabala Town is famous because it is the first stop for tourists if you are going to visit Lake Bunyonyi. So at the bus stop, you will find a lot of brokers or people selling their services. Just be careful and always book a place online.
I woke up really early to catch the morning bus and I was really afraid that I will not get any coffee in Kabale. While walking around found a cafe and got a shot of espresso and my life was back again. ☕️
So my goal was to find a camping site along lake Bunyonyi. I faced a challenge of changing Kenyan shilling as this was that period when the old 1,000 note was banned. Found myself a boda guy and the journey began
This turned out to be the longest boda ride in my life though this record didn't stay for long it beat the current one held in Tanzania while going to Kikuletwa Hotsprings
The start of the boda ride after entering the murram road.
I can't emphasize how beautiful the landscape is getting here. The boda guy told me this is called the heart of Africa. This was the start of the lake
Had found this hotel called Kalebas Resort which also has camping facilities. You can check them out I paid an equivalent of 500 Ksh for camping with my own tent. They also have all the facilities included
Ladies and gentlemen allow me to introduce you to Lake Bunyonyi.
In my language "Nyonyi" is a bird but I don't know why I didn't ask if it is the same and maybe the name of the lake comes from that but to the bird lovers this is paradise. Bird spotting is one of the main activities here with several species around.
It was getting late and I had to assemble my mansion. The staff at the hotel were kind enough to help me with a mattress. Let me tell you maina a yoga mat wasn't meant for humans to sleep on I learnt this the hard way 😫😭
Views of the hotel and I had to drop my famous Jumpstagram by the lake
Commercial break to listen to Jayden so I know if I am going back home 😭
The whole lake has several hotels and I went to sample a few restaurants around. Had really good fish curry on this one. There are also local shops around to have Rolex which is a must-have if you are in Uganda
Speaking of Rolex this was one of my favourites, It was special Rolex with avocado and cabbage mix.
