It is easy to remain in your comfort zone especially if you aren’t one given to ambition till adversity happens. The day I couldn’t afford to pay my new rent in the uk cause tax exemption as a student ended, i understood the benefits of adversity as a necessary tool for growth.
Told my boss I needed a pay raise cause I was working above my JD or I’ll seek better opportunities somewhere else. He was shocked, indidnt know where the boldness came from but one thing was clear, I won’t be able to feed, transport, pay rent or even save on the current salary.
Certain level of misfortune has been the pivoting tool for some people leading to financial freedom. Someone said the day he decided he was going to quit his bank job as a contract staff earning 50k/M was when he lost his mum to an illness earning 150k & above could have solved.
His side job/other opportunities he was sacrificing prioritising a 5-9 that wasn’t paying him enough was embraced fully. I introduced him to someone he did an urgent job for, they gave him 30% upfront, he aced it & got bigger contracts. Took a great misery to realise his worth.
Adversity isn’t an essential prerequisite for success but it sure does give a huge nudge towards the right direction. I abhor the hardship narrative used as a tool for enslavement in Africa, but we can’t deny the history of great victories borne out of difficult defining moments.
