Harry Vardon won 6 Open Championships over his illustrious career but winning one at St Andrews eluded him. From a championship standpoint his best finish was 2nd in 1900 but he was 8 strokes back which would also be the closest in strokes out of his 4 attempts at the Old Course
In 1895 Vardon finished 16 strokes off the lead, 1900 8 strokes, in 1905 he finished 9 strokes back and 1910 he finished 14 strokes off the lead and behind a golfer by the name of Donald Ross (the golf course architect).

The Old seemed to befuddle the greatest golfer of the era
Harry Vardon’s stroke average over those 4 majors on the Old Course (during his prime) was an 81.

This doesn’t take away from his amazing accomplishments, but it’s an interesting footnote.

James Braid & JH Taylor both claimed 2 Opens at St Andrews over this period.

As I write up this short little thread it’s not lost on me how our departed friend, @BillTheBrit1 would have hated this tweet. More so if I reminded him that Bobby Jones figured out the Old Course where Vardon did not;)

RIP Bill
