I want to talk about a very special place in my heart. Short thread: I’d never lived away from home until I moved to London in 2000 seeking fame & fortune as an illustrator and tho I lived with friends, It was tough. 1/12
My friends all got jobs and I struggled on trying to make it as an artist. I often felt lonely & lost. I was failing as an artist, I missed my family and I was poor. Buying a DVD was a luxury that I’d spend weeks deliberating. 2/12
But a comic. A comic I could afford. I hadn’t bought comics for 5 years but a not quite diminished passion suddenly re-emerged whenever day of just aimless wandering through London I came across this sign 3/12
Back then Gosh comics was in this little characterful store near the British Museum. My first few visits were fleeting. ( I was a shy insecure guy back then ). I’d buy a comic. Maybe two and leave. 4/12
Then before long ( and thanks to a part time job making and dressing up as teddy bears ) I was visiting every week and slowly I became a more regular face. Just enough to say hi. 5/12
It was @MODOKagogo , Gosh’s amazing manager that finally broke the ice and got me talking. Then as the weeks became months and then years I got to know and become good friends with many of the fine folk that worked there. 6/12
They all helped not just to foster my love of comics but to broaden it. Like any good bricks and mortar store they pointed me towards new discoveries and made me try books I would never have tried before. 7/12
And when my comic career began they supported me all the way. Always ordering more copies of my early books than they probably should have and when I was successful enough to warrant it I was thrilled to have my first ever signing at Gosh. 8/12
At a time when I was homesick Gosh became my home & it’s staff my friends and I can say without a shadow of a doubt I’d not have a career without them. 9/12
You’ll find @GoshComics comics at its new home on Berwick Street in SoHo together with a new Bat sign and you couldn’t find a more welcoming and amazing comic store. Perfect for newbies or someone looking for something new and unexpected. 10/12
It’s a tough time for bricks and mortar stores so I hope you’ll excuse me plugging them but comic stores need your support now. Whether that be safe (masked) in store shopping or using their website. Why not treat yourself to something new & exciting 11/12 https://goshlondon.com
You could even get an exclusive signed book plated version of Invisible Kingdom vol 1 ! https://goshlondon.com/invisible-kingdom-tp-vol-01/ Because without them it might not have even existed. 12/12
