Plenty of countries successfully reopened schools with no face mask requirement. Others successfully did it with a mask requirement.

Mask or no mask, the key to a successful reopening is very simple:

You keep levels of community infection low. https://twitter.com/IrishTimes/status/1287635590205202432
Norway are Exhibit A for no mask, given their schools have been open since April.

No masks, no 2 meter requirement and they're doing fab.

What they did so well is keeping community infection levels very low (under 10.0 per 100,000), so that few adults had Covid19 to pass on.
Kids wash their hands every 2 hours and teacher gives their desk a quick disinfectant wipe down once a day.

At lunch, they created pods of 12 in each class and each pod play with each other in one side of playground. No-mask teachers even pick up small kids if they fall.
Uruguay is Exhibit A for masks + 1 meter and they're also doing great.

The key is community infection levels - if Covid19 is rampant in the community, kids are at more risk.

If it's contained and suppressed, like Norway and Uruguay (and Ireland), then they're at very low risk.
That's where the likes of Israel failed. It wasn't their school reopening at fault, it was their community infection levels.

They made a series of bizarre decisions involving indoor venues, such as opening up gyms and nightclubs too soon.

Community infection skyrocketed.
If we keep community infection under 10.0 (it's 5.3 on the 14-day but closer to 4.0 per 100,000 on the 7-day trend), then either approach will work here.

If community infection levels are high, neither approach will work well.

It's up to all of us to keep them low.
(By under 10.0 per 100,000 I meant case numbers, i.e. all forms of transmission)

We need to do a better job in Ireland of recognizing how well we've contained the virus.

The last 100,000 tests came in at ~ 99.7% negativity. Very few people are being infected.

Keep it up.
