A thread on why any campaign on tech accountability must be intersectional and inclusive....
When I started Glitch I was so conscious about it becoming the "Seyi show". I was aware of my relative privilege being a Black woman in politics with social/ cultural capital. I was aware there have been millions of women who experienced online abuse around the world that didn't
Have a platform to be heard, believed or supported.
I was aware that other marginalised voices were never centred when it comes to online abuse and tech accountability.
So from the outset Glitch has championed lived experience been intersectional and international. We have to understand that online spaces are global and what we are asking for here in the global north could be super damaging for countries in the global south.
And not just Glitch, @antisempolicy have been talking about gendered anti-semitism online, @TellMamaUK have been talking about online Islamophobia and its relationship with offline spaces.
By failing to be intersectional, centre margnalised/intersecting identities even within your own communities, we're not actually making any progress. We're upholding these multi-billion companies to continue working for the status quo
I completely understand the hearts behind those joining the recent boycott but it had a real opportunity to champion the intersectional work activists have been pushing for, for yrs including tech accountability, safety by design, system change, duty of care, digital citizenship
I completely understand tech accountability, but when talking about safe spaces, online hate, it has to be about all forms of hate and especially those intersecting.
I hope after the boycott we can take *all* that energy into effective allyship campaigns and projects and amplify the collaboration small orgs have been doing for years on a shoestring budget.
We have a real opportunity to do this with the UK Online Harms bill which only focuses on children and terrorism. It must take into account women, marginalised communities and intersecting identities! And we cannot wait until 2024!!
In the meantime, I'll be meeting with our partners to pull together our key recommendations on tech accountability so celebrities, influencers, politicians can help us call for system change!
