I’m tired of these assertions that our promotion isn’t a good achievement. So I’ve made a league table of the last 20 years of Championship winners, and here are my observations (a thread).
Leeds are 2nd in terms of goals conceded. Norwich are 20th for their promotion last season where they conceded a staggering 57.
We’re middle of the pack for games won (28). The 13/14 Leicester and 05/06 Reading sides managed to win 31 (and break the 100 point barrier).
Unsurprisingly, we’re quite low (14th) for goals scored. That might indicate that we have difficulties with converting chances. Something I’m sure none of us were aware of already...
We had quite average performance in terms of losses, too. Despite our amazing ability to avoid conceding, we lost 9 games. The best performer here was Reading in 05/06 losing only twice. Sunderland of 06/07 were the worst losing 12 times.
In terms of points, we’re 7th. Quite a few winners have won the title on fewer points than us. Burnley 15/16, Bournemouth 13/14, Wolves 08/09, Reading 11/12, QPR 10/11, Sunderland 06/07, Cardiff 12/13 and West Brom 07/08.
Finally, in terms of goal difference we’re fairly good in 9th with +42. That 05/06 Reading side had a +67 which is mental. The worst performers are that dreary 12/13 Cardiff team that finished with +27.
All told, I don’t buy the assertion that Leeds were just the best performers in a rubbish season, because our results stack up with other winners of the league. We’re rightful winners and deserve our place in the 20/21 Premier League.
