In the last month since this tweet, I happened to receive a lot of support but also a lot of weird takes. Probably the weirdest was that the last kid was dissolved into acid 25 years ago so the matter is not relevant and Mafia men can be fetishized without a second thought. https://twitter.com/spiegatrix/status/1275356468221485061
First of all, good luck fetishizing this (not here to shame people for their looks but let's be honest here, you don't want to read a romance novel with any of these people)
Second of all, and I've noticed that mostly from Americans/People from English Speaking countries: "This is not relevant". To you, buddy. The world is not your cultural oyster, we're not here to offer you quirky tropes that deserve zero research.
I can only imagine the outrage if a non-American would say: "Well, the last documented lynching by the KKK was in the eighties so I can totally turn my male protagonist in a charming southern gentleman who loves torches and white, pointy hoods, you know, I love the aesthetic".
That would be ignorant as hell, isn't it? Ignoring all the history and the consequences KKK had and still has on the current situation in your country? Well, you're doing the exact same thing with other people's cultures by exploiting tragedies for aesthetics.
That said, I'm pretty aware that the issues are very different, and believe me, Mafia has quite revolting takes when it comes to race too, all I'm saying is that there are dark parts in the history of every country and culture and -
we shouldn't turn them into meaningless fictional tropes without being aware of the actual damage they did the countries and the people they affected. Some subjects can't just be treated superficially.
