Perhaps it is cultural but the argument that we knowingly let or elect to have some people die, so we could enjoy material things and not temporarily lose certain freedoms, is terrible.
Yes, we can make hard decisions, but heartless decisions are another thing. At the moment, hard decisions can be made without a rush to heartless decisions risking opening up the old and the vulnerable to the full scale of this virus.
The price we pay to be a society is to look after each other. Who are we if our most vulnerable are the first to be offered up? Of course it is hard. It is painful, but perhaps we are also learning âbeing in this togetherâ is the easiest part. Showing up for each is hard.
Thankfully, I donât have to make the call. I can wear a mask. I can do my part. Many Victorian are, for that I am grateful. It may not be my family or me who these act of âkindnessesâ may keep alive today, but tomorrow, it may be. This is how we build community.
Perhaps it is not cultural, maybe it is being a refugee, knowing that I was once diminished and dismissed for being a statistic.
