The manufactured outrage machine is in overdrive because I reposted a flyer on Instagram earlier today for a @BLMLA protest against the federal secret police in Portland. The flyer said “Fuck Trump.”
It is telling that some people are more concerned with tone policing @BLMLA's flyers or an elected official's posts than they are in addressing what #BlackLivesMatters and thousands of supporters are protesting.
You know what's an outrage? Unidentified armed soldiers throwing people into unmarked vans, and firing tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters speaking out against racism and injustice.
You know what's an outrage? Systemic racism, or police abuse, or the beating, maiming or killing of Black men, women and children. Or a racist president.
You know what's an outrage? That even in elementary school, Black boys are disciplined more often and more severely than anyone else.
You know what's an outrage? That in a pandemic, black people, brown people, people of low income, are getting sick and dying at disproportionately high rates.
You know what's an outrage? Disproportionate numbers of black women dying during childbirth.
You know what's an outrage. Black people being 8% of LA's overall population, and 34% of its homeless population.
You know what's an outrage? The huge racial gaps in wealth, income, job opportunity, and more.
You know what's an outrage? A president and a political movement that is trying to rollback voting rights and strip millions of the franchise.
You know what's an outrage? Attempts to reduce or cut unemployment benefits during an economic collapse. Or attempts to strip people of their healthcare during a pandemic.
You know what's an outrage? The wave of state-sanctioned discrimination against the trans community.
You know what's an outrage? A president and a party coddling the fossil fuel industry while our childrens' futures are being destroyed by a climate crisis.
You know what's an outrage? Repeated attempts to curb women's rights.
You know what's an outrage? Imprisoning people at the border, kidnapping their children, and then losing them.
Finding profanity more objectionable than all of that is, quite simply, fucking ridiculous.
