I’m the student rep for Political Science in my school’s Research Training Committee. Today I broke down in front of my peers + staff colleagues b/c of the immense toll of our uni’s inadequate support for grads, govt’s lack of support for the sector, + watching my peers suffer.
I’m not posting this for sympathy- I’m posting it because I’m angry. I am not interested in making it through this degree on the basis of having particularly good supervisory support to navigate institutional hurdles if it means my peers who don’t have this aren’t coming with me.
I’m not interested in making it through this degree if it means accepting that my university has chosen to jettison casual workers.
I’m not interested in making it through this degree if it means my supervisors and other permanent and contract academics are pushed to breaking point with inflated workloads and asked to take pay cuts.
Watching people burn out for no reason other than institutional unwillingness to slow down, spend money and provide support is so hard.
