hey here's a thread on why hyperfixations are often times not a good time for people with autism/adhd/ocd, whoever may be impacted, since i so often see non-neurotypical people use the term without realizing what it can entail
im not google so if you want a dictionary definition of what a hyperfix is, and how it effects people look it up yourself. this is a thread that's debunking the idea that hyperfixes are just obsessive interests or something always enjoyable
also keep in mind that hyperfixes affect every neurodiverse person differently! i also hope that neurodiverse people find solace in this thread
hyperfixations often keep us from doing important things. i can barely make content for anything else when im thinking about my hyperfix, which is pretty much 24/7
this can give me burnout or make it hard to focus on one thing for a long period of time, which is rather unproductive. sometimes it even keeps me from sleeping or taking care of myself, which may be funny 2 joke about but only ends poorly
i also find myself building up my entire identity around my hyperfix. this doesnt just mean fanart or followers. it means being so invested in shows that all your friendgroups or things you make are related to them, and it's near impossible to let go
also losing interest in a hyperfix without a new hyperfix to turn to Sucks so bad. ur desperately trying 2 hold onto a thing u once loved but it doesn't make you happy anymore. and all your friends are moving on but you can't seem to. with nothing else, you become passionless
hyperfixes also make u feel annoying, since often times theyre the only thing u can talk about. or ull bring them up unprompted. ull begin to associate irl things with that media immensely and separating the two is hard. it's hard to maintain a friendship with ppl not interested
and once you've been through a few interests it begins to feel tiresome in a weird way. the current hyperfix makes you happy, but there's an underlying knowledge you won't care about this thing in a few months or however much time. it's painfully fleeting
and when you buy merch or make stuff for the hyperfix, it feels almost empty later. you hardly care about that thing anymore. looking back on it, it may feel like a waste
people without autism, adhd, etc. im asking you to please use obsession, or interest, or some other term besides hyperfixations. it will make us feel better represented and understood
1 more thing i want 2 clarify is that some of these negatives r a product of how society treats nd people, or a specific person's mental health state and/or their friends

my hyperfixations have brought me lots of joy + good things, but that doesnt always outweigh the bad
if any nd people would like to add to this or criticize my points, pls feel free to, i want this thread to be a productive and comfortable place to talk n_n
I SHOULD CLARIFY RN. i meant to say "non-neurodivergent" in the first tweet not "non-neurotypical"!!!! big mistake on my part!!!! my focus in this thread was to educate mostly nt people, im so sorry for any confusion
