1) Despite asking people to wear masks while working out, a #COVID19 cluster has hit a gym in Terrebonne north of Montreal. In this thread, I will examine the expanding range of outbreaks and what this mean as Quebec gets ready to permit public gatherings of up 250 people.
2) Eight clients and two employees of the Nautilus Plus gym have contracted #COVID19 in the past 10 days, TVA Nouvelles is reporting tonight. The gym is asking anyone who used its facilities from July 10 to July 20 to get screened for the #coronavirus.
3) This outbreak adds to a string of others recently across Quebec in different settings. As I reported Friday, two Montreal bars have shut temporarily because of exposure to the #coronavirus. What’s more, Lachine has closed three pools after a lifeguard tested positive.
4) There have been five outbreaks linked to day camps in the Montérégie, two outbreaks in seniors’ residences in Quebec City and a cluster of cases infecting nearly two dozen farm workers in the Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean region. Supermarket employees are also testing positive.
5) These outbreaks demonstrate the #coronavirus is circulating silently in communities across the province as Quebec has reopened. The outbreaks are also proof the spike in #COVID19 cases is not simply the result of more testing, as Deputy Premier @GGuilbaultCAQ has maintained.
6) Quebec on Sunday observed its 12th day in a row of a rise in the number of active #COVID cases, reaching 2,200. Meanwhile, Montreal posted 50 cases, down from 85 the day before, but still almost triple from the start of July. Please see the rebounding orange line below.
7) Yet despite the proliferation of #COVID19 outbreaks in multiple settings across the province, Quebec will allow gatherings of up to 250 people as of Aug. 3. Neighboring Ontario, with fewer cases despite a higher population, has no plans to permit gatherings of this size.
8) At Montreal's neighborhood level, the chart below shows the health district of Hochelaga—Mercier-Ouest—Rosemont posted the greatest number of cases, followed by the Plateau Mont-Royal and Dorval—Lachine—LaSalle, highlighting how the #coronavirus is now everywhere in the city.
9) At the same time, there are positive trends: Montreal hasn’t declared any #COVID19 deaths for eight consecutive days! Hospitalizations are trending down, although some hospitals have admitted new cases. And the city’s eldercare homes haven’t posted cases in days.
10) My thread on what's needed to create the ideal conditions to reopen schools in September generated a tremendous response. A Montreal surgeon wrote me expressing deep concerns about the imminent large gatherings. Can we expect more opposition in the coming days? End of thread.
