I’m grateful that people want to interview me, or have me on panels. I recall when no one wanted to hear from me about anything. I just wish people wanted to talk to me about craft decisions in stuff I wrote as much as, or more than, publishing’s diversity issues...
For example, in SPIN, I wrote three revolving POVs across two timelines and it was hard. That could be a convo. Or NOT SO PURE AND SIMPLE, the first chapter was a juggling act you may not have noticed, we could talk about that. Rarely get those ?s because...
I help found We Need @diversebooks. In 2014. That excites folks. And I’m proud of the work we’ve done. But I stepped down in 2018, have published three novels since, and yet 80% of the people who reach out to me want the same talking points I’ve been expressing for 6 years
I doubt most of them have ever read a word I wrote. It’s kinda giving me a complex. I THINK I write decent stuff, but so few people have questions about my actual novels and short stories...idk...🤷🏾‍♂️
Don’t misunderstand...Publishing stil has work to do, and those conversations still need to be had, I only want to talk about my writing a bit more instead of being in your conversation to mostly (or ONLY) recap what you can find on the @diversebooks website.
I mean, yes, you can ask your diversity questions, but ask me book stuff, too. Maybe? Please? 🙏🏾
