inspired by @orangesodatweet, thread of my favorite REM songs (1 per album)
Ending Fables on a super high note, I always felt that this song hints at the direction for some of their latter work, some of Mike Mills' best backing vocals too https://open.spotify.com/track/0R9He5QEKW6f7LVIOpDcXf?si=SgjIlXyKSxaz7VOW2-8ZXQ
Always felt that Document was slightly more of a mixed bag than most of their early work but the high are tremendous. Like this song, jangle af. https://open.spotify.com/track/3yLlEK0X2jjjcqchXVfQmr?si=LzCnBlwwQ8eHyKJQCBGWBA
Out Of Time is another album with a wide gap in quality between the best songs and the rest.

Most day I'd say Country Feedback, but I'm picking this one bc Kate Pierson's performance is everything https://open.spotify.com/track/6Vrh0bYZVIEMg7E9ldIJBJ?si=91EwOFtgSc69T8oN13duvw
Yeah there's no way it could be anything else. Automatic is my favorite REM album and I love absolutely everything about it, but this song is too meaningful for me not to pick it. https://open.spotify.com/track/6G0NzOx2jEPFsSmhr9N8Ys?si=sFpgiZg0Rwe3NR9GA53NiA
Not a good example of this album's sound as a whole, but I love the way this Automatic-like ballad serves as the light of the tunnel at the end of the dark & labyrinthine (but excellent) New Adventures in Hi-Fi https://open.spotify.com/track/6TU0zW9qJaG53vSa1R57qb?si=wVz8n1KOQWmEqLhoWIGbtg
My hot take is that Up is one of the best things this band has ever done. This might be genuinely the most sonically pleasing song in their catalog. https://open.spotify.com/track/7deqKuUVEpZKN6zxBBxDlA?si=1IgC_Oj4SAujJOSxFfCC4Q
Reveal also deserves a better rep than it usually gets. It's not Up but the best songs are incredible. Now this is a way to open an album. https://open.spotify.com/track/1dksufC13qePUoSQtfJ46n?si=iR-_QWdxSeuaZVHam6BwXQ
Sadly I can't defend Around the Sun like I do with their previous 2 albums. I still think it's pretty nice, and I do love this little ballad. The melody is lovely and it has certainly helped me through some rough times. https://open.spotify.com/track/1aKB6ZZ6AII26vny70lIVZ?si=MidVKGK9QfSXPlmKCComIA
Collapse is the REM album I think the least about. I like it, and it's a nice summary of their whole career, but for that same reason it feels a bit superfluous.

I'll do my Pearl Jam apologist brand justice by posting this song with Eddie. https://open.spotify.com/track/0ITvGtPhcFwdQnKtlabYpS?si=lxYIlDk5SNqJfddAYdWrUQ
Bonus 1: Dead Letter Office

I love Sitting Still from Murmur, but I always liked this old demo version better, the hook is absolutely lovely. https://open.spotify.com/track/4YFn5v9yEtmVEopGoCy1xd?si=G3Dv8EMvS5ew8S3784pr2Q
Bonus 2: Non album tracks

Only doing this bc I wanna post this track. I like it more than It's the End of the World As We Know It, which I already love https://open.spotify.com/track/57YD4jDnXPlfKom3vy3Cto
