Remembering Eddie Shack, who played in the first live hockey game I ever attended way back in Sept of 1963. My dad took my 2 older bros & me to see Toronto Maple Leafs play San Francisco Seals in a preseason barnstorming tour. NHL champs vs WHL champs. We were all Leafs fans

Shack was a 3rd/4th liner on that powerhouse squad, still developing at 26 & still 3 years away from the 1st of his five 20-goal seasons. remarkably scored w 5 different clubs: Leafs, Bruins, Kings, Sabres, Penguins. Eddie was one of many veterans who benefitted from expansion

If I was to choose a modern comparable to Eddie Shack, it would be Zack Kassian. Big, fast, unpredictable, could delight his fans in one moment & exasperate them in the next.

I'd started watching hockey on TV at age 7 that spring of '63, saw every playoff game & was completely hooked from the get go. When Leafs came thru #yeg that fall their faces & mystique were already familiar to me, awesome to see in 3D from maybe Row 8 at Edmonton Gardens.
