the other day someone was asking about resources to help get started vidding! I'm copy/pasting what I wrote so it'll be organized into a real thread. First off: if you need high-quality, no-subtitles cql source, check out live-action-raws on tumblr/tagged/the+untamed.
when you're getting started on vidding the major things are:
-finding the right software
-finding good source files
-clipping, or otherwise organizing your footage
-figuring out how to put it all together
re: software- I vid on bootleg sony vegas. I like it. (and anyone on here can dm me, I'll send you the link.) some people use Davinci Resolve, which is fully free. Here's some recent discussion about software for vidding: https://vexercises.dreamwidth.org/2170.html
(in general, vexercises is a very cool vidding resource! I recommend poking around there.) https://vexercises.dreamwidth.org/2027.html
I *loved* the pechakucha challenge, because it's a way to start vidding OR get un-stuck, and also because it results in these gorgeous little vid-poems!)
clipping: what I do (which is on the inefficient, low-tech end of things as far as I can know): use the windows photos trim tool to create copies of the stuff I want, name it descriptively and sometimes slap a number at the beginning so it'll stay in chronological order.
more clipping: I've seen some recs for avidemux, which is free clipping software that works on all operating systems.
some people don't clip and just import whole episodes into their software, which requires having a computer that can Handle That without everything crashing. then I think some organize their footage into subclips within the program, others directly throw stuff on the timeline.
"putting it all together": for the tech side of stuff generally I just do hyper-specific youtube searches for "how to do [x] in [program]" or google searches for "why am I having this STUPID TECH PROBLEM" and so far the forums always come through.
for the creative side, I like how vexercise challenge posts break down a lot of different ways footage can fit together. (if you find the individual journal post for each challenge, there will be more examples included). https://vexercises.dreamwidth.org/675.html#cutid1
there's also videlicet, the vidding zine, for all sorts of cool vidding meta and this: https://vidders.github.io/articles/vidding/demystifying.html
that's the thread! I'd like to end it with open invitation for anyone to contact me with get-started-vidding questions. (with the caveat that I am definitely not any kind of expert, especially on tech stuff.)
