The senator said ‘We have to study the history of slavery and its role and impact on the development of our country because otherwise we can’t understand our country’. Yes. Study slavery’s impact on the development of our country. Not its impact on enslaved human beings. Pathetic https://twitter.com/tomcottonar/status/1287489209469734915
He says America wasn’t built on slavery, just that it was literally built by slaves...
God I tire of the uber patriots who argue that slavery was everything but slavery. That its impacts were economic or political or social but never human. That its impacts ended immediately in 1865 & don’t continue today because they themselves were never impacted. It’s pathetic
I’m a local cop in a US southern city. I see the ongoing impact of historical and current racism every single day. I always say ‘we don’t have to be this way’. But to not be this way, we must first admit that we most certainly were & are this way. Who we are is who we were.
I wrote in the @washingtonpost last month that while I’m not to blame for historic & current injustices, I most certainly am responsible. Children argue blame. Well-intending adults embrace responsibility. I wasn’t born in 1619 but my privilege & current luck in this country was.
