Everyone who says Karen is a slur against women, uses ‘straight white man’ for the same effect. Karen is just funnier. It isn’t about all women, it’s about a particular type of white woman. (White) Women aren’t above being critiqued, or indeed mocked, for our behaviour. Jesus.
Of course sometimes the word gets used in ways that don’t make sense. The other day some weird Jennifer Lawrence stan called me a Karen for making a joke about Jennifer Lawrence. But I didn’t cry sexism, I laughed.
If you see the word Karen being used to mock talk-to-the-manager white women, how about instead of complaining you think about the times you’ve weaponised your race and class to get privileges other people might not?
Chances are if you’re a middle class white woman, you’ve been a Karen. I’m fat & a lesbian which can set me back but this discourse around white feminism has shown me the times I too have been a Karen. If you think the slur is about you it probably is, & likely for good reason.
Stop being ridiculous and do something useful.
