Fieldwork is crucial for field geologists. Then the rocks have to be analysed by people who know how to run EPMA, ICP, FTIR, Raman, interpreted by experimentalists who translate X to PT, modelled by computational geos who see evolution in time, etc etc etc etc https://twitter.com/MeganJPalaeo/status/1287517141290418183
We are all geologists. Even those who don't go to field. Even those who can't go to the field. Even those who can, but choose not to.
Gatekeeping "geology" as "being in the field" is wrong.
And for those who claim that even if you don't do fieldwork, there is value in being in the field just to see how it is.
Is there also value in trying to run an analytical instrument for a week, or writing tectonic modelling code, or doing fluid dynamics experiments?
Each of these are equally important. Glorifying fieldwork over sitting in a dark lab does not advance science.
Yea, it's nice being in the field and I understand (yet disagree) how people gatekeep it as part of science. But tbh "nice" is not a requirement for "good science".
