So often I saw him bring clarity in an instant to a discussion others were confused about -- not aggressively or triumphantly, but simply to move forward our understanding.

He never used his brilliance to dominate a room, ...
... but instead only to crystallize a concept,to expand the discussion, to bring forth a new idea.

And whoever you were, he would entertain your idea as an equal to his.

It is so hard to find the right words, but I know that our department will be so much poorer without him
