I never thought I'd see "The Heiress" trending on Twitter, so in honor of my personal favorite Olivia de Havilland performance, a photo thread:
Catherine Sloper showing a rare moment of cheek: her aunt’s expression says it all.
Olivia won her second Oscar for The Heiress (her first was 1947’s To Each His Own) and here she displays them proudly on her mantle.
"The Heiress" premiere at the glorious Carthay Circle, October 23rd, 1949. When I interviewed her in 2016, Ms. De Havilland said she was not in attendance because she was still recovering giving birth to her son. But she said she could *see* the spotlights from her home.
(side note: even though Olivia wasn't at the premiere, her co-Star Montgomery Clift was and he escorted Elizabeth Taylor. It was the night that the two became lifelong friends!)
Love this candid, cute peekaboo from Olivia as she shimmy’s into costume.
This isn’t in the film, but I love that hair flip action!
Oh, the tenderness of this moment.

Catherine Sloper and Morris Townsend plan an elopement that is not to be.
“Bolt the door, Mariah.”
