Did Bobby Jones see into the future?

The trend towards larger and larger drivers may not have started with Bobby Jones, but the benefits were not lost on him.

Jones was a thinker and a tinkerer- here is the story of his Collossus Driver & my translation into its meaning...
Bobby Jones put his BA in Mechanical Enginnering from Georgia Tech to work when he designed the Colossus Driver. Jones was known to experiment with clubs going through hundreds of hickory shafts to find a good fit for his play set. He put his mind to improving the driver as well
What did Jones foresee?

Bobby Jones saw the potential of increased distance, reduced spin and forgiveness from the larger driver head

It gets better...
Jones’ use of a splice neck driver is fascinating! Why? The splice neck instead of the socket head created more surface area between the shaft and head which leads to better feel.
This may be a little known fact but Walter Hagen used a spliced neck driver during his prime.
I also LOVE the use of the bamboo shaft. The use of a stiff bamboo shaft does three things: 1) Lighter weight = faster swing speed 2) Lighter shaft creates better feel 3) The kick point of bamboo over hickory is completely different!

Bamboo = the graphite shaft of its day.
Bobby Jones was one of the great thinkers both on and off the course.

I find everything about this article fascinating & I hope you do as well.
