today on its 30th anniversary, i won't be spending my day celebrating the ADA itself. instead, i'm celebrating those who placed their disabled lives on the line so i would never know a world without it, and those who fight alongside me today for the equity we still lack #ADA30
I urge everyone to watch Crip Camp @CripCampFilm on netflix, the best representation of the disability rights movement I've ever seen. It was made by the activists who were actually there ! #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs
for a shorter watch, here's a great doc on the 504 sit-in to demand enforcement of the first federal civil rights legislation
a long overdue recognition of brad lomax, black panther and pivotal disability activist https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/08/obituaries/brad-lomax-overlooked.html?smid=tw-share
here's another doc about the gang of 19, activists in Denver who largely contributed to the movement
watch ANY video, read any words from my absolute idol, @judithheumann
the best PBS doc on the capital crawl isn't on youtube anymore, but read up! who knows when the ADA would have been passed if activists hadn't dragged themselves up the capital steps in protest http://zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/capitol-crawl-for-ADA/
This activism continues post ADA in so many ways, like access to health care and medicaid https://www.businessinsider.com/disability-rights-activists-threaten-indefinite-sit-in-over-gop-health-care-debate-2017-7
only recently has there been some recognition of intersectionality and the struggle of BIPOC people within disability activism, we MUST continue to grow and lift them https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/disabled-black-searching-justice-n1232204
this is only a short list. my activism is not only modeled after these efforts but wouldn't be possible without them. i am eternally grateful to the people who have dedicated themselves to our community and made it possible for me to join the fight #ADA30
i'm 27, only 3 years younger than the ADA. don't let black and white photos fool you! disability rights are relatively new and we have a lot left to accomplish. "history" is still happening
i'm going to continue sharing more contemporary resources and writings about where our activism is headed for the rest of the day and urge everyone to share. further, pay particular attention to resources created/stories told by disabled people!!!
