A reminder that the Portland protests started as BLM protests, remain BLM protests, and — once the national attention and federal troops leave — will presumably continue to be BLM protests demonstrating against the Portland Police Bureau. (1/3)
Anyone who claims these protests are primarily about the Trump administration is getting it wrong. If you listen to the chants and the Black folks on the bullhorn, you’ll hear a continued focus on police brutality against Black (and Indigenous) folks. (2/3)
I see media outlets trying to write articles and put together “expert” panels without interviewing a single Black journalist, protester, or community leader. This is unacceptable and needs to stop. (3/3)
To be clear, I could also be doing better at this! For example, I could be turning down media opportunities as a non-Black person. There’s no guarantee that they won’t just get a white person to replace me, but this is something that I’m very seriously considering moving forward.
On an EXTREMELY related note, both @riotribs and @WallOfMoms — arguably the two most visible protest-related groups in the media right now — have recently transferred leadership over to Don’t Shoot PDX, a Black-led police accountability group founded by @TeressaLRaiford.
