Did anyone else watch that great BBC drama 'The Living and the Dead' a few years ago? I didn't know about folk horror then but loved it, and loved The Insects version of the Lyke Wake Dirge
Okay, investigating (see: googling) the text is at the latest Early Modern, John Aubrey recording it in 'Remaines of Gentilisme and Judaisme' (1686-7). It is thought to be significantly older (see the lyrics here for its distinctive Yorkshire dialect)
The mss containing the dirge is held at the British Library (Lansdown MS 231).
There is also an accompanying walk: The Lyke Wake Walk, which crosses 40 miles over the moors from Osmotherly to Ranvenscar.
