A thread of some favorite Olivia de Havilland films in various categories/genres:
Melodrama:
HOLD BACK THE DAWN (1941) – improbable, intoxicating romance
IN THIS OUR LIFE (1942) – she holds her own against neurotic Bette Davis
TO EACH HIS OWN (1946) – one of the great transformation performances
THE HEIRESS (1949) – more chilling than any horror film
Comedic but will break your heart a little:
THE STRAWBERRY BLONDE (1941)
Comedy:
THE GREAT GARRICK (1937) – James Whale period romp!
IT'S LOVE I'M AFTER (1937) – Olivia as a rabid fangirl in my favorite screwball
FOUR'S A CROWD (1938) – hilarious scatterbrained heiress antics
PRINCESS O'ROURKE (1943) – so disarming and spacey as a sheltered royal
Noir and Gothic thriller:
THE DARK MIRROR (1946) – Olivia playing good and evil twins with two subtly distinct voices, movement styles, etc. Staggering.
MY COUSIN RACHEL (1952) – ambiguous and enchanting
HUSH, HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE (1964) – no spoilers but DAMN
Action-oriented flicks with Errol:
CAPTAIN BLOOD (1935) – the fiery chemistry is ON; gotta love rebellious ingenue Olivia
ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) – Technicolor perfection; she saves the day, really
THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON (1941) – go ahead, break my heart, movie
Oh, heavens, and THE SNAKE PIT (1948)! Maybe her best performance, all things considered. One of the most raw and vulnerable performances I've ever seen. Suffering and terror portrayed with illuminating empathy.
Olivia de Havilland made so many good films that I didn't even think of this one. Such a tender, bittersweet performance in one of her best later roles. The ending always makes me cry—in a good way! https://twitter.com/MeredithRiggs39/status/1287446525438763009
