Elephantiasis

Can’t make this stuff up.

Got to give good news of a twin gestation
. Too often we come with news a patient doesn’t want to hear. This time I was able to share in a patient’s joy and it was amazing.
I learned that to properly empathize we have to first get to know our patients.

Got to talk through a mock case with my clerkship director oral board style and it was an amazing learning experience. I had the right Dx and disposition, but missed lots of stuff on the way.
I learned that I need to be more systematic and keep working on my anchoring bias.

Had a slow high acuity shift that ended with an avalanche of patients. Learned how a peritoneal lavage was/is done. Discussed thoractomies.
Got to see one the next day
I learned that the ED is unpredictable. You have to stay on your toes and can never stop learning.

Peds shift: Helped reduce a dislocated knee. IV insertion on a premie who was recently discharged. Sutured a large laceration
. Discussed pain management in pediatrics
. Thought ‘Why don’t we do this in adults?’
Lots to be learned from children and how we care for them.

A new mom told me she was happy to see me and proud of me as a black doctor. We shared stories of our childhood and reflected on the blessing of parenthood. It felt amazing to be seen...for both of us.
I learned that being myself will make me a better clinician.

I LOVE the ED!! I get to nerd out, comfort patients and their families, fix things, and give children stickers. It’s everything I hoped it would be and more
