In the 15th Century down to mid 20th Century the now Middle East was known as North East Africa or Near East.

The term "Middle East" was coined in 1901 by Adm. Alfred Thayer Mahan, the celebrated American advocate of naval power. It was popularized in speeches in 1916 by Sir Mark Sykes, a British member of Parliament and also popularized by the British media.
The discovery of Oil in the Area led to different struggle and war in the region by the Europeans and USA leading to the fall of the Ottoman Empire which is now Turkey in Europe.

The middle East created use to includ Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, Cyprus, and Bahrain, Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Sudan, Egypt, Arabia and Libya
