The oldest African republic, Liberia has done so much for humanity. But Despite the records, little is known about her. Celebrating 173 years of independence today, here is few of her many achievements since 1847. Happy Independence Day to my Motherland

Up to 1957, Liberia was the only independent African country, and during the fight against colonialism we not contributed to the independence of Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria, etc, but also became the beacon of hope for the whole of Africa; the Lone Star 1/6

When Africa was called the dark continent, we became only African members of and rose to sign the founding charter of the League Nations (1919) and the United Nations (1945). In them all, we represented a continent and made it clear the aspiration of its people.

When Patriarchy was armed to the teeth and entrenched not only in the wardrobes of homes but also the cupboards of global offices, Liberia produced the first Black president of the United Nations General Asssebly; second in the world. 3/6

When all of the great powers of the world (US, Britain, France, USSR) feared and only fought Nazism offshores, Liberia, determined to show what Africa is capable of, invaded Germany and the Nazi Power; thereby preparing the rest of the word for the final showdown

At a time when the United States and other Western “champions” of women empowerment have neither produced female president or Vice President, we elected @MaEllenSirleaf Johnson Sirleaf as president, @JewelHTaylorOff as Vice President of the republic. 5/6

When no country could, Nelson Mandela was given a Liberian passport to facilitate his travel around the world, Tsitsi Mashini, leader of the Soweto 1976 Uprising, lived and died in Liberia, and Liberia became the birth place and the chief financier of the AOU. 6/6

So if you ever wonder why most Liberians have a Pan-African mindset or are obsessed so@much with Africa, it’s because we were the first Africa, the Lone Star the cradle of black excellence, the oldest and greatest Republic, and the beacon of hope. Happy Independence Day Mama
